UnderstandingSociety

Welcome to the gateway to UnderstandingSociety!

There is a lot of interest throughout the world on the subject of better understanding the large social forces that affect us today. Most basically -- can we think more clearly about the basic conceptual and methodological assumptions we make about social science inquiry? And can we arrive at more compelling foundations for thinking about what social progress in the twenty-first century will require? I invite you to join in this emerging international conversation.

My research web site has drawn a distinctive group of scholars, graduate students, and other intellectuals, with overlapping interests in the philosophy of social science, the philosophy of history, economic development, Marxist theory, and other related topics. Over 10,000 visitors have visited the site since July 1, 2007. And this group comes to the site from all over the world, including 130 countries and almost 2,000 cities. Please feel welcome to visit, read, and discuss!

Given the international diversity and intellectual focus of people interested in these topics, it would be very interesting to create a forum where you can interact with each other. UnderstandingSociety is a social network site that will allow you to share your background, ideas and thoughts about the social sciences and social change with other engaged intellectuals. I hope that this site will generate some interesting conversations among scholars in many cities around the world. I hope you will visit and describe your background and interests. And if you would like to put out some thoughts or questions about the social sciences and social change, then perhaps other visitors will engage in discussion with you about these subjects.

I have also created a blog where I am posting some current thinking about some issues in the philosophy of social science and social change.  Please visit the blog -- UnderstandingSociety.blogspot.com. Again -- this blog is interactive and I invite your comments and discussion.

If you'd like to see what happens when people from all over the world come together to share some interests about the social world we all live in, come and visit these new tools for discussion of these topics about the global social world.

The research and writing site

A site about social PROCESS AND SOCIAL change ...

A set of interactive web resources for scholars, students, and other professionals who share an interest in the foundations of the social sciences, the philosophy of history, and social change. It is hoped that these topics will draw participants from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Australasia, and the Americas who are able to bring the perspectives of their societies into the discussion.
