Procedure:
  • This activity should be done on an individual basis.  This lesson may take several days to complete depending on your class size, number of computers, and allotted time.
  • Remind children of prior activities where we've practiced writing our names.  Tell them that today we are going to use the computer to write our names.  Ask the children if they've ever written their names on the computer before.  Discuss their prior experiences and the tools or software used.
  • Show child how to open the Kid Pix file or insert the CD-ROM.
  • Discuss the various writing tools available for use (paint brush, pencil, keyboard, etc...).  Show them the color board and show them how to select colors.
  • Do some exploration.  "What do you think this tool does?  Let's try it."
  • Clear the screen using the eraser.
  • Encourage children to write their names with the various tools.  "How will you need to move the mouse to make an S?  What color will you use?  Can you find the S on the keyboard?"
  • Change backgrounds, add music, try different fonts and sizes, etc...
  • Print pictures and display in classroom or send home.
