"I feel honored to have been the first UM-Dearborn student to receive the Summer UM Energy Institute Research Fellowship.  With this opportunity I was able to increase my research experience and expand upon my growing knowledge of microbial biochemistry and physiology.  My experience in this program this summer allowed me to learn about energy efficiency and how it can affect all aspects of life including microbiology.  This summer I was able to get hands on lab experience that I could only receive if I were in graduate school.  The amount of knowledge that I gained through this experience was greater than that  of a typical lab course during the school year.  I believe that my experience in the fellowship has helped me get a key insight into what it is like to conduct research on a graduate level.  Through the mentorship of the energy seminars and the guidance of Dr. Tiquia, I was able to grow as a student and a researcher".
