Welcome to My E-Portfolio

My name is Erika Daniels.  I currently teach in an upper elementary classroom at Dearborn Heights Montessori Center. I attendend Michigan State University and graduated with a B.A. in History with an minor in Spanish from Madonna University. I did my student teaching at Henry Ruff Elementary School, in Garden City, Michigan. Some of my favorite work experience involved working as a writing consultant at the Michigan State University Writing Center. I had first hand experience in helping writers through a reader's feedback.

School and Student Population

Dearborn Heights Montessori Center consists of approximately 400 children.    Groups are not separated by grade level, but by mixed age groups.  My students are in the 9-12 year age group which is most closely associated with the 4th through 6th grade group.  My challenges are unique in that while I am a certified teacher in the state of Michigan, I am not a certified Montessori teacher.  While I share teaching responsibilities in my classroom, I am classified as an assistant because I have not taken course work for Montessori Certification.  In order to work effectively with my students, I have to make sure that all of my lessons are hands-on and will extract skills that come from Montessori lessons.

Technology Environment

We have quite a few high tech resources in our room. I believe this is why the STar Chart results classified us as a high tech school.  In a class with 22 students, we have 4 computers, two printers, a ceiling projector and a television.  The students use the computers for online research and word processing on a near daily basis.  We use the computer in conjunction with the projector when the teachers want to use it in the same way we would use a blackboard.
