Research Experiences for Undergraduates at other sites

Program links and external pages

There are so many programs that I do not attempt to list them all here. Here follow links to a few particular programs and collections of REU links; I encourage you to find more. The links below should each open in a new tab or window.

  • The Arecibo Observatory Summer REU program (application deadline late Jan)
  • NOAO's REU page (Kitt Peak application deadline late Jan)
  • Caltech's SURF program (application deadline late Feb)
  • NASA Undergraduate opportunities (various application deadlines; the SETI Institute's deadline typically early Feb)
  • NRAO Summer internships (deadline early Feb)
  • The NSF's list of REU programs (Various application deadlines:)
  • Cornelia Lang's page with REU links in both Physics and Astronomy including tips for applying

  • About REU programs

"Research Experiences for Undergraduates," or REU programs, are (usually) summer programs by which (usually) undergraduates can perform (usually) paid work on a live research project under the supervision of (usually) a professional researcher. Many (most?) state-funded exploration organisations now offer REUs of some form, including many large observatories (like the Arecibo Observatory) and most NASA labs.

Why REUs are useful: In the physical sciences, having research experience at an institution other than your degree instution is very helpful in gaining entry to technical jobs in industry as well as graduate school in the Physical sciences (for the top-ranked research schools like Caltech, some undergraduate research experience somewhere is essential to even be considered for grad school). REU programs are also fun!

This page contains a set of links to REU programs that may be of interest to you. I encourage you to talk to me (WIC) if there are any specific programs or general areas you are interested in. Application deadlines are usually during the first few months of the year (Caltech SURF for example is Feb 22, 2015).

    Tips for applying

I am curating a google doc with hints and tips for applying to REUs (as well as grad schools). You can find the doc at the link below (may require login to the UMich system):
