IMSE 317 Test 1 (7 February 2001) Review
Checklist
Examination coverage: through Chapter 3 of the textbook.
Examination structure: the first portion will be closed book and closed
notes, and represent about 30-40% of the total points. You will write
short-answer paragraphs explaining concepts such as:

concepts related to discrete probability distributions

methods of descriptive statistics
-
distinctive types of data and how they affect the power of
statistical methods

concepts related to the definition and fundamental properties of
probability
The second portion (about 60-70% of the total points) will be open book
(including tables), open notes (class notes, homework assignments), and permit use of a calculator. You will work problems similar
to those discussed in class and assigned as homework, covering topics such
as:

usage of specific discete distributions: the binomial, Poisson,
negative binomial, and hypergeometric

use of products, permutations, and combinations for
enumeration
-
examination of data sets
-
computation of probabilities
Please bring one bluebook. The test will instruct you to write the
closed-bookportion on one looseleaf sheet of paper, turn it in, and write
the open-book portion in the bluebook.
Test duration: 6:10pm - » 7:45pm,
followed by a break & short lecture on new material.
