Student Academic Conduct

This paragraph is taken verbatim from the "Undergraduate Announcement 2003-2005" published by the University of Michigan - Dearborn, the School of Management section, pages 302-303.

A generic statement of policy on academic ethics from the Office of the Provost.

A student in the School of Management or any student enrolled in a School of Management course will not engage in academic misconduct, including, but not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, aiding and abetting dishonesty or falsification of records and official documents as defined in the Statement of Student Rights and Code of Student Conduct. Definitions of prohibited conduct, sanctions, procedures for applying sanctions, and appellate procedures are specifically set out in the Statement. Copies of the Statement are available in the School of Management Office.
Note on the Student Code of Conduct

The following note received from Ms. Karen Parsons, MIS department secretary, acting on behalf of department authority, on 25 August 2000, provides clarification of procedures.

  1. When a student's academic conduct appears to violate the Student Code of Academic Conduct, the faculty shall assign an interim grade of "NR".
  2. The Faculty shall, within a reasonable time, indicate his/her concern with the student, and attempt to informally resolve the matter by action mutually agreed upon between the faculty and the student. The faculty shall make appropriate change in the grade.
  3. If the violation occurred in regard to the Final Exam and Final Course Project and the faculty is unable to reach the student in a timely fashion, the faculty shall, within a week to 10 days of the following term (Spring or Summer tern [sic] included) contact the student. They shall attempt to informally resolve the matter by action mutually agreed upon between the faculty and student. The faculty shall make appropriate change in the course grade.
  4. Every effort should be made to informally resolve academic conduct matters with the faculty and within the School of Management before an allegation of Code violation is initiated. Assistance may be sought from the Department Chair to informally resolve the matter.
  5. If such efforts within the school fail to resolve the disagreement, the faculty or the student may bring the matter before the Academic Affairs Proceedings Advisor.
  6. The Academic Affairs Proceedings Advisor shall bring the faculty and student together informally and attempt to resolve the dispute.
  7. If no resolution is forthcoming from these informal processes, the Academic Affairs Proceedings Advisor shall advise the faculty to file an academic conduct complaint against the student and request the Hearing Board of the School of Management to initiate formal academic conduct hearing.
