Developing the Image of the Child

The term "Image of the Child" comes from the Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education.  Teachers following the Reggio philosophy view each child in the classroom as being capable and unique.  Children's individual strengths, potential, curiosity, and interests are highly valued.  By helping children develop positive self-images, teachers empower children to trust in their own decisions, establish relationships with eachother, and make sense of their surrounding environment.  Through daily explorations and self-expression in the classroom, children are able to construct knowledge and develop skills.

The lessons implemented (exhibits) focus on children's unique traits and abilities.  Children's voice recordings, their photographs, and work samples were the main components of the lessons.  By focusing on each individual child, each person received extra attention and assistance.  This allowed all children to feel a sense of importance, resulting in the development of self-esteem.
