2008 Atlanta Cask Ale Festival
Gold Medal: Savannah's Moon River Brewing Co.: Little Chocolate Doughnuts Porter
dry-doughnuted cask with three "HOT NOW" Krispy Kreme dougnuts actutally in the cask!! |
Arlo & Thad's Tasting Notes: We showed up at 4:30, only a half hour late and this beer was already near the end. I (Arlo) thankfully got it as my first and Thad and I both agreed it was a tasty, sweet, rather chocolatey-smooth porter. It had a creamy mouthfeel with a robust baker's chocolate mixed with confectioner's sugar aroma. |
Silver Medal: Two Ponds's Gunstock Mild |
Program Notes: This mild exhibits a dark mahogany color, light tan head and a nutty, caramel, toasty, chocolate malt aroma and flavor with hints of raisins and molasses. |
Arlo & Thad's Tasting Notes: Neither of us could pick up on all the subteties mentioned in the above review. I do recall it being rather enjoyable and...well, mild |
Third Bronze: Terrapin's Rye2 Reserve |
Program Notes: "Light and dark oak chips soaked in Woodford Reserve Bourbon create magic in this cask. Warming and well-balanced with hints of vanilla, wood, and bourbon." |
Arlo & Thad's Tasting Notes: I realy enjoyed this beer but admittedly I knew what was coming when I tried it (Thad had warned me). "All I can taste is fucking bourbon!" |

Thad toasts a Green Man Imperial Stout. |
Arlo drinks a bourbon barrel aged Rye2. |
Fan's Choice Award: Sweetwater's Jackass Barleywine |
- Arlo & Thad's Tasting Notes: I think we both avoided this one at first, not wanting to get carried away with a heavy barleywine too early into the tasting. I found this to be similar to the bottle and initially criticized for this. It still is the best barleywine I have ever had, even if it is not my favorite style of beer. I spoke to the brewer, Nick, for a good while - nearly making an ass of myself at first criticizing the jackass (the beer, not Nick) - and he pointed out a few subtle flavors I had not initially identified. He admitted the Simcoe flowers added little to the cask but the oak aging contributed a nice vanilla flavor. Not a favorite for either of us, but still a good beer. |
Eventually we ran low on raffle tickets and short on time. The casks were beginning to float and we decided to call it a day. Our designated driver was kind enough to run us by Taco Bell, a kindness we rewarded with free tacos. In all seriousness, those tacos were dank after a bunch of cask ales - many high alcohol and bourbon aged! It was a great experience and I hope to win tickets again for next year, or at the very least register in time to go for free and work. |
