Terrapin Brewery Tour
(February 20, 2008)
|
|
The Tasting Room bar was pouring Rye, Cream Ale, India Brown, American Imperial Pilsner, and Rye2.
The large white cooler behind the bar also holds all of the hops used in Terrapin's beers. |
Diana, Carlos, Thad, and Carol drink some brews before the tour while Arlo snaps a few pictures. |
| The brewery was surprisingly crowded given their lack of advertising. It seems word of mouth has spread well, just like it did for Trappeze Pub. For $7.00 you get a new Terrapin pint glass and six tickets for beer tastings (this is now $8.00 for 8 tickets). Each ticket is worth 1/2 pint of any of their primary beers (Rye, Cream, or India Brown) or you can use two tickets and get 1/2 pint of a Seasonal (American Imperial Pilsner, Rye2, Wake n' Bake, or Big Hoppy Monster) |

This is the inside of the Mash Tun. The Mash Tun is simply used to steep the malt. Malt is mixed with water and allowed to steep for a set amount of time (60 to 90 minutes). The large rakes you see are to stir the mash to ensure as much of it as possible is steeped in hot water (malt is pricey!). After the mashing is complete, the liquid mixed with the malt is allowed to slowly drain off through the bottom valve and is sent to the Boil Kettle. At the same time, water is pumped from a hot tank and introduced to the top of the mash. This allows the residual sugars to be rinsed from the malt and is known as Sparging. |

Stacks of empty six-pack boxes and other supplies fill the shelves. |
Owner & Co-Founder, John Cochran, led our tour of the brewery. |
Another view of the inside of the brewery. Most of the equipment is along the back wall, leaving a ton of room to expand! |
