EDT 501 - Research, Trends, and Issues in Educational Technology

This course provided  me to with an opportunity to explore, analyze, and reflect upon current educational technology research, trends, and issues involved in today’s digital classroom. I observed a wide range of technology developments, and investigated current trends impacting the field of educational technology.  Here is a brief discussion of each topic discussed  (a link is provided to show examples of my reflections):

"What Technology Is and Isn't"  - I took a look at the definition of technology integration and listed examples of what constitutes actively incorporating technology.
"Why Technology is Important" - I researched why it is important to actively incorporate technology into one's lesson plans.
"Emerging Technologies in K-12 Instruction" - I had an opportunity to look at today's emerging technological resources such as wikis, blogs, podcasts, digital videos, etc.  I reflected upon the importance of using a blog to better inform both students and parents/guardians.
"Funding Technology and the Digital Divide" - This assignment opened my eyes to the importance of funding educational technology to bridge the "Digital Divide."
"Legal Issues Surrounding Educational Technology" -  It is critical to discourage students from copying, pasting, and submitting.  Students must be made aware of federal copyright laws and the multimedia fair use guidelines.
"Ethical Issues in Educational Technology" - In today's digital world, it is important to encourage students to use computers safely and ethically.

EDT 502 - Survey of Programming/Authoring/Basic Tools

This class provided me with an excellent opportunity to become familiar with today's emerging technology resources. I was able to assemble a classroom blog, a website, a podcast, and I created e-mail accounts for my students.  Here is a brief discussion of each project:

The Bouwman Blog - The Bouwman Blog was created to aid in the communication between the teacher, students, and parents/guardian.  The blog will post student work, podcasts, homework tips, and up-coming events.  Creating this blog gave me an opportunity to work with an emerging technology resource.  In the future, I plan on utilizing my blog as a means to communicate.  I will moderate all comments to ensure a safe environment, and I will post new topics often.

Student E-mail Account - I created an action plan to create student e-mail accounts.  I set up student accounts through Gaggle.net - a free service.  Students will have an opportunity to collaborate with fellow peers, a skill that is necessary for today's Information Age.  The service provided appears to be set up with student safety in mind.  I plan to require students to e-mail each other and share ideas during school projects.

Mr. Bouwman's Homepage - I designed a homepage to help better inform both students and parents/guardians to the happenings in the classroom.  The website is directly linked to Frank E. Weiss Elementary and the Gibraltar School District.  A classroom website is necessary to help students and parents/guardians find out important classroom information.  I plan to continually update my website, keeping current information readily available.

Podcasting - I created a Habitat Project Podcast (Click on the link to view my action plan).  Podcasting is an emerging technology resource, and this project provided me with an opportunity to learn how to create podcasts.  In the future, I plan on having students make their own podcasts, and have our Weiss Morning Announcements posted daily on a podcast attached to the Weiss Elementary homepage.

EDT 510 - Teaching with Technology

This course provided me with an opportunity to design, implement, and evaluate different technology resources that were directly integrated into a science unit based on our solar system.  Each lesson directly aligns with Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS) and Michigan Elementary Science Standards. Lesson plans and reflections are provided below.

"An Introduction to Our Solar System" I created a lesson plan that introduces students to our solar system utilizing "A Closer Look at the Planets: A Space Series" digital video via United  Streaming.  Students will fill begin adding information to a KWL chart to organize information. The KWL chart will be used throughout the unit to keep track of previously learned information, scientific questions, and newly learned information.  By using a digital video, the amount of time spent lecturing is decreased. I believe that utilizing digital video will hold the students' attention longer than using a traditional lecturing  methods.

"Surfing the Web for Out of This World Information" I created a lesson plan that allows students to utilize search engines to locate information based on the student's selected planet.  Students will locate and print relevant information needed for the unit. Similar to the first lesson, the students will continue to add information to his/her KWL chart.  I believe that utilizing the Internet to locate information actively engages students.  This lesson allows students to practice locating information on the World Wide Web, an important skill.

"Writing the Presentation"
I created a lesson plan that allows students to utilize Microsoft Word to create a finished copy of his/her "Out of This World" presentation.  Students will use the save, print, and spelling and grammar check functions while practicing his/her typing skills.  This lesson provides students with the opportunity to create a finished product.  Students with poor hand writing skills have the opportunity to create and display a legible presentation. The spelling and grammar check function also allows students to see the mistake(s) he/she has made, and the suggestions necessary to fix the problem.

"Creating a Podcast" - I created a lesson plan that introduces students to the concept of podcasting. The students will create his/her own audio file to be placed on the classroom's podcast with the assistance of the teacher.  Each student will reflect upon the experience in his/her journal, explaining the concept and process involved in making a podcast. I believe that students will become extremely motivated to create a strong presentation once they are informed that their audio file will be placed on the World Wide Web.

"Out of This World Presentations" - I created a lesson plan that allows students to present his/her selected planet's "Out of This World" poster and pamphlet utilizing a digital video projector.  The students in the audience will take view each presentation and take notes.  Additional information will be added to the KWL chart started at the beginning of the unit. This lesson is an excellent opportunity for students to become acclimated with using projectors. Students need to know how to use projectors for future presentations.

EDT 514 - Application of Instructional Design

This course introduced me to the Instructional Systems Design concept, better known as ISD.  The ISD concept consists of the ADDIE five step process (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation).  It is my belief that the ADDIE process provides instructors with a systematic approach for creating engaging lessons that optimize student learning.

"Managing the Great Lakes' Food Chain" - I created my first ISD unit centered around the State of Michigan's Fourth Grade Ecosystem Science Standard.

EDT 520 - Design of Technology-Based Learning

This course provided me with an opportunity to design  instructional materials to increase student learning through the use of various technological resources. Each project was designed to directly align with Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS) and Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs).  Click on each link below to view design documents.
Software Simulation 1 - Camtasia
Plain Text No More! I designed my first software simulation to teach students how to change text appearance. Students will learn how to create boldface, italicized, and underlined text. In addition, students will also learn how to change font size and style.
Software Simulation 2 - Camtasia
2D Takes Shape. - I designed my second software simulation to teach students how to use various Microsoft Word functions. Students will learn how to create an auto shape, text box, and insert word art.
Virtual Field Trip/Tour - Terra Clues
Touring Michigan - I designed a virtual field trip utilizing a free online resource. Students utilize Google Earth to locate various Michigan locations.

EDT 531 - Leadership and Professional Development in Educational Technology

This course introduced me to the necessary steps required to create effective technology professional development. Pre-formative, formative, and summative evaluations were utilized to provide learning opportunities.  The Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology framework was followed. Click on the link below to view my Professional Developement Activity.

Professional Development Guidelines - Effectively Utilizing an ELMO Digital Document Camera and Projector

I created professional development activities centered around the use of an ELMO digital document camera and projector. The professional development lessons incorporated Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) across the curriculum.  During each lesson, both students and participating teachers were actively engaged using an ELMO digital document camera and projector to enhance presentations.
