12th Annual Great Smokies Brewgrass Festival

Asheville, NC (September 20, 2008)

Deutschland über alles

The food selection at the festival was pretty good. Green Life was there with some asian stir fry, Asheville Pizza and Brewing had, of course, pizza, and there were a few other places as well. We started with some edamame for munching while we got our first beers and Michelle got a king size lemonade (she was pregnant).

Best New Tasting: Highland Imperial Black Mocha Stout
Every year at the Brewgrass Festival, Highland Brewery releases a new Imperial-ed beer. It all started with the Imperial Gaelic Ale, followed by Imperial Kasmir IPA last year, and finally the Imperial Black Mocha Stout this year. Here is what one BA had to say about it while trying it at the release:

"The aroma was deep, lots of roasted malts and cocoa. Some light hints of alcohol mixed in throughout and a slight touch of molasses as well. The flavor was just very well done here. Almost all hints of alcohol are well hidden and delicatly subsided. Intresting mix of smoked and roasted malt flavors at first, when it warms it takes on a much more sweet profile with oodles of chocolate and sweet coffee coming though now. Rich, creamy full bodied feel was making this a very nice sipper, but again, very well hidden alcohol only served to keep it very easy."

Bottles were available for $8 from the brewery on the Sunday following the event. I picked up a case to bring some to friends and put in the cellar. Recently, they released a bunch more that went unsold in Asheville. According to the website (accessed on Dec 17th, 2008) they still have them available from the brewery if anyone wants any. I think the alcohol is a bit hotter in the bottle and recently got to compare when Trappeze Pub in Athens, GA got a few kegs. Both are great but I plan to lay the bottles down for a bit first.

Obama Fans
There was a very nice woman walking around handing out Obama fans. We all wished each other good luck in the election but now our worries are behind us. He is now officially our president.

Randal the Enamel Animal
  Ingredients in Randal
The Dogfish Head guys sent down Randal the Enamel Animal to the Brewgrass Festival this year. This was the same randal that appeared at Trappeze in April. In a contest the pub had to determine the best ingredients for the randal, they chose DFH 90 Minute IPA run through coffee, basil, and mint. They repeated this winning combination at the Brewgrass festival, this time using the 60 minute IPA. In the picture on the right you can see a closeup of the ingredients in the randal.
